When it comes to maintaining muscle – especially as we age and fight off sarcopenia—both the National Academy of Sports Medicine and the American College of Sports Medicine generally recommend a minimum of two days per week of resistance training. Two sessions per week can help maintain muscle mass, but three days per week is often recommended for more significant strength gains and better protection against muscle loss. The important thing is consistency. Even twice a week, if done regularly, will help sustain strength as we age.
Recommended Training Frequencies for Strength & Muscle Maintenance
• Twice a week: Commit to two sessions weekly to maintain strength and prevent muscle loss—perfect for staying strong as you age.
• Three times a week: Train three days a week to build muscle and enhance strength gains—an ideal balance of effort and recovery.
• Every other day: Working out every other day ensures consistent progress with ample recovery—keep muscles strong while allowing them to rebuild.
• Five times a week (with rest): Training five days a week with dedicated rest keeps you at peak performance—maximize gains while honoring your body’s recovery needs.
